Johnston County will begin administering Emergency Rental Assistance aid online starting September 7, 2021. If you are a Johnston County resident and behind on rent or utility payments, you may qualify for the program.

The Emergency Rental Assistance program is made available to residents through $13 million allocated to Johnston County through federal COVID-19 relief funds. Johnston County will provide monetary support to tenants, landlords and utility companies to cover portions of rent and/or utility shortfalls resulting from a loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To qualify for assistance, a household must be responsible to pay rent on a residential property and meet each of the following criteria.

➡ One or more people within the household must have qualified for unemployment benefits, had a decrease in income, had increased household costs, or experienced other financial hardship due directly or indirectly to the COVID-19 pandemic; AND

➡ One or more individuals in the household can show a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability; AND

➡ The household has an income at or below 80% of the area median income. Priority will be given to households that are below 50% of the area median income.

Individuals that need mortgage assistance must complete a paper application with the Department of Social Services. Funds for mortgage assistance are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The Department of Social Services is located at 714 N. Street, Smithfield, N.C. 27577. The units in southeast Raleigh, just off MLK Blvd., were recently sold. The low-income tenants who live there were told last month they have to be out by the end of June.
