A partly reconstructed 1760 timber-frame home from Ipswich, MA, is the centerpiece of "Within These Walls," a Smithsonian National Museum of American History exhibit sponsored by the National Association of Realtors that traces the history of American homeownership through five families who lived there over more than two centuries.

The exhibit opens at a pointed moment: the median home price has risen from $96,800 to $418,000 over the past 30 years, pushing the price-to-income ratio from 3.1 to 4.9, while the median first-time buyer age has hit a record 40.
