A Tidbit about Land Measurements
Approximately 725 years ago (late 1200's), during the reign of English King Edward I, a law was passed which has been carried forward even today as part of our land measurement system. It read “It is ordained that 3 grains of barley dry and round do make an inch, 12 inches make 1 foot, 3 feet make 1 yard, 5 yards and a half make a perch, and 40 perches in length and 4 in breadth make an acre.”
These units are still in use; the perch is often referred as a pole or rod.
The perch became referred to in many succeeding "tomes" on surveying and navigation. Of particular note is in 1616 when Aaron Rathborne described his chain he referrred to its basic unit of length as a "Statute Perch" and in 1623 when Edmund Gunter described his chain he also referred to its basic unit of length as the "Statute Perch." A few years after Plymouth Colony was settled, in 1664, English Surveyor Vincent Wing also "invented" a chain which used the perch as its basic unit of length.
As a result of Edmund Gunter's suggesting that a chain be 4 perches long (66 feet) with 100 links, it became known as a "Gunter's Chain" or simply "Chain" and was the "standard" of measurement in America for many years.
