Sept. 20, 1805
Ahead of the main party, Capt. William Clark crosses from Cedar Creek to Lolo Creek and on to the Weippe Prairie. He meets three nimiipuu boys, who, terrified at the sight of beings with upside down faces and eyes like fish, flee and hide themselves in the tall prairie grass.
Clark approaches cautiously and gives them bits of silk ribbon and sends them to the village he sees a short distance ahead. The nimiipuu greet the strangers warmly and feed them a sumptuous repast of salmon (nacóˀx̣) and camas (qém ̉es).
The terrific ordeal of the Bitterroot crossing (k’usey’neme iskit) is over.

The drive along Highway 12 from Lolo, Montana, over Lolo Pass and through the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest in Idaho is stunning.

Mile after mile, the scenery gets better around every bend.

One hidden gem nestled along Highway 12 is the serene beauty of the DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove in the heart of the National Forest. Here you’ll find a tranquil grove of ancient western red cedar trees, some reaching more than 100 feet into the sky, and estimated to be more than 1,000 years old.

Named in honor of Bernard DeVoto, a renowned conservationist, writer, and historian, this ancient grove pays tribute to the man who edited and interpreted one of the 20th century’s most notable versions of the Lewis and Clark journals. An avid outdoorsman, DeVoto often camped in this grove as he experienced the Lewis and Clark Trail.

DeVoto died in 1955 and the following year his ashes were scattered throughout the area, at his request.

You’ll find DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove at milepost 165 on Highway 12, about 10 miles west of Lolo Pass.
