Let’s talk checker boarding, and no we don’t mean the game. Though more prominent in surrounding states such as Montana, Wyoming, and Oregon as pictured above, checker boarding is one way in which public lands have become landlocked.
According to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership “Checkerboard lands are remnants of a bygone era when the federal government gave railroad companies alternating sections of land that met corner-to-corner”. While efforts have been made to rejoin these lands and reopen access, the work has just begun. For more information on checkerboard lands visit or www.trcp.org
