1. Pull furniture away from the walls to give the illusion of a bigger room.
2. Any light or neutral-colored paint makes a room feel big and bright. White paint is not your only option.
3. Allow natural light to flow through the room. Also, letting light bounce off mirrors makes a living space appear larger.
4. Use the walls wisely. Open shelving or one large piece of artwork creates an illusion of a bigger room.
5. Don't just buy small furniture. Instead, add one or two larger pieces to the room.

Planning to go out of town? There are some things that you need to check off your list before leaving the house.

1. Make sure to tidy up your home. You don't want to come home to a messy area after a long time away.

2. Remember to take out the trash. If you don't, you run the risk of coming home to all sorts of rancid smells and pests galore.

3. Before you leave, check the washer. Coming home to a whole load of laundry that has had a week to sit and sour is less than ideal.

4. This is a no-brainer, but it doesn't hurt to double-check that all your windows and doors are locked before leaving.
