A house in Evanston sold this week for only the second time since it was built in 1883, with original wood detailing, stained glass, a carriage barn and even an outhouse intact.

“The only thing that’s been changed is the kitchen,” said Kenny Hilbig, the Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty agent who represented the house on Maple Avenue for the estate of its late owner. The kitchen rehab, he said, was done in 1967. That was two years after the only other sale this house has ever been through.

Put up for sale in late June at $925,000, the house, a five-bedroom on about one-fifth of an acre, attracted several offers, Hilbig said. The sale closed Aug. 3 at $1.14 million, which is 23% above the asking price.

The buyers “were tickled to find an old house that hadn’t been renovated and wasn’t a dump,” said their agent, Gloria Wagner of Christie’s International Real Estate. In two years searching for a Victorian, she said, those were the two types they saw a lot of: renovated to the point of having little history left or rundown.
