One of the best times to enjoy La Jolla? A beautiful weekday after school is back in session.

Carol and I took advantage of the weather and walked down Cuvier Street to Wipeout Beach, one of those little spots you can easily miss if you don’t know where to look.

The crowds are lighter, the weather is still incredible, and sometimes it feels like you have a little piece of the coastline all to yourself.

Just one local tip: watch your snacks. The seagulls apparently consider unattended bags an open invitation.

More than three years after a failed city stormwater pipe led to a massive sinkhole near the La Jolla Terrace condominiums, the damage remains clearly visible.

Structures at 8803 and 8807 Gilman Drive are still behind chain-link fencing, with doors and windows covered in plywood because they remain unsafe to enter. The City of San Diego has proposed a $10 million settlement involving the homeowners association and one individual owner, while other owners and renters continue pursuing separate claims.

The situation is a powerful reminder of how public infrastructure failures can displace residents and create years of financial, structural, and legal uncertainty.

One of my favorite walks in the Village of La Jolla — from my front door to breakfast at Brick & Bell.

Past the tennis courts, a few La Jolla landmarks, the ocean, my favorite “broccoli tree,” and apparently the world’s most financially responsible wishing fountain.

All for the real destination: an egg & cheese bagel with extra turkey sausage. Worth the walk every time.

It’s the little routines like this that make living in La Jolla pretty special.

The La Jolla Historical Society has a new name! After more than 60 years, the longtime La Jolla institution is now officially the Museum of History and Culture La Jolla.

Located inside historic Wisteria Cottage on Prospect Street, the museum tells the story of La Jolla through rotating exhibitions focused on local history, architecture, art, culture and the people who helped shape the community.

In this video, I take you inside the museum to see what’s there, talk about the new name, and look at what’s coming next — including The Scientific Art of Historic Preservation exhibition and La Jolla Modernism and Architecture Week.

If you live in La Jolla, are visiting San Diego, or just enjoy learning about the history and architecture of this incredible coastal community, this is one La Jolla landmark worth knowing about.

You’ve probably walked past the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in the heart of La Jolla Village—but have you ever stepped inside?

Located at the corner of Wall Street and Girard Avenue, the Athenaeum has been part of La Jolla’s cultural history for more than a century. Its roots date back to 1894, and Ellen Browning Scripps served as the first president of the Library Association of La Jolla.

Today, the Athenaeum is much more than a traditional library. It’s dedicated to music and the arts, with books, periodicals, sheet music, recordings, exhibitions, concerts, lectures, classes, and beautiful spaces to simply sit, read, and enjoy.
