🏡⚡ Why didn’t we think of this sooner?

I was scrolling YouTube over the weekend and came across a really helpful video that got me thinking about power outages and home preparedness. https://youtu.be/LFTF7rIT51A?si=rSE-v5fWOxCD0AGV&t=276

We heat our 1896 farmhouse with LP. Thankfully, outages are rare where we live (thank you, Oakdale Electric Coop! 🙌). But like many homes, if the power goes out, the furnace goes out too — controls, blower, and all.

We already own a small inverter generator that we use for camping. What many homeowners don’t realize is that a generator like this is often enough to keep your furnace running — and likely your refrigerator too.

A permanent standby generator can cost thousands 💸. A portable inverter generator? Hundreds. The video also highlights a manual transfer switch that allows you to safely connect a portable generator with an extension cord — a simple, practical solution.

As an experienced DIYer, I’ll be ordering one and installing it during the next warm spell. If DIY isn’t your thing, this is definitely a job an electrician can handle.

Just sharing in case this helps someone else. Hopefully, we never need it — but it’s always smart to be prepared. 👍
