Today was the first of hopefully many garbage pick ups for me this year! My friend Kim and I tackled the woods down the street from me, by the Carpenters Union Hall and Speedway. It only took us a little over two hours and it felt great to see the difference we made! This is my 3rd year cleaning this woods. The first year, I picked up 21 huge bags. This year, we got 14. An improvement, if you can call it that! It would be lovely to not fill even one! I encourage you to do the same as we did today....even if it's just your block! Gather a group and tackle an area where you see a need! It's everywhere and only YOU can make a difference!

I've been thinking about starting this page for a long time. I participated in a clean up last year in Michigan City and have also cleaned up a wooded lot two years in a row in LaPorte, near my home. The amount of garbage I collected was appalling! I hate garbage and the way it makes me feel; when I see it laying along roads, vacant lots and around businesses. It disgusts me to think that people don't care about their surroundings and how their carelessness affects our earth. I am starting this page to try to encourage people to bring a change, by getting out there in their own neighborhood and picking up garbage. Or getting a group together and spending an afternoon cleaning up a park or along a country road. Of course, using gloves and bright colored clothing or a safety vest is a must for your own protection. Those long handled grabbers work pretty well too. If you can safely get your children involved, I'm sure it would teach them to never become an adult who litters. Take them out for a treat afterwards to thank them! Our city can't be it's most beautiful with garbage everywhere we look. And it won't get any better unless we all take some responsibility. Be"YOU"tifying LaPorte takes YOU, to make a difference!
