Yesterday, we went to the shelter to meet the husky boy we had planned to adopt.
We had everything readyātreats, toys, the thrill of finally bringing home a new family member.
But the moment we saw him, our hearts tightened.
Huskies are usually bright-eyed, energetic, full of curiosityā
but he was nothing like that.
He sat quietly by himself, head bowed, eyes closed as if the world had been too heavy for far too long.
The volunteer whispered,
āHeās been here for a while⦠heās gentle, just really unsure.
A lot of people overlook him because shy huskies donāt āshow wellā in kennels.ā
The way he sat thereāsilent, fragile, holding all his fear insideā
it broke something open in both of us.
I looked at my partner⦠they looked backā¦
And without needing to say anything, we already knew.
I finally breathed,
āWeāre taking him home.ā
The drive back was quietā
huskies are usually talkative, expressive, eager for interactionā
but he stayed curled up, still and cautious.
Every few minutes heād lift his head just a little,
letting the sunlight touch his soft gray fur,
as if rediscovering what warmth feels like.
That night, in his new room, he tucked himself into a corner and fell asleepā
maybe, for the first time in a long time, feeling safe enough to rest.
One dog.
One shaken spirit.
And an entire future of love waiting to unfold.
Welcome home, sweetheart.
Youāre safe nowā
and youāll never, ever be alone again.
