🚌 Heads up, Greater Lafayette — school starts Thursday, August 6th for TSC, LSC, AND West Lafayette schools. Kids will be back at bus stops and crossing streets for the first time in a while, so let's all get our heads back in the game.
A quick refresher on Indiana's school bus law
🛑 If a school bus has its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, you MUST stop — whether you're behind it or approaching it from the front.
🛑 The only exception: if you're on a divided highway (separated by a median or physical barrier) and traveling in the OPPOSITE direction of the bus, you don't have to stop.
🛑 Passing a stopped school bus with the arm extended is a Class A infraction in Indiana — and if it injures or kills a child, it becomes a felony. This isn't a "roll through it" situation.
A few more reminders as we all adjust to school-year traffic again:
👀 Slow down in neighborhoods and near bus stops, especially in that morning rush.
📱 Put the phone down — kids don't always look before stepping off a curb, and you need every second of reaction time.
⏰ Give yourself extra time on your morning commute. Buses stopping and starting will add a few minutes — plan for it instead of getting frustrated by it.
Kids are unpredictable, drivers are distracted, and a few extra seconds of patience is nothing compared to what's at stake. Let's have a safe first week back.
