Christie’s gave it a pre-auction estimate of about $1.5 million–$3 million. The saddle is the actual race saddle used by jockey Ron Turcotte during Secretariat’s 1973 Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont). It includes the lead weights signed by Turcotte, stirrup irons, and related memorabilia documenting the races. Turcotte privately sold the saddle to collector Jim Irsay in 2023 for about $2 million before it became part of the auction collection. The final hammer price has not been published yet.

UPDATE: The saddle sold for $1,524,000 (including a buyer’s premium of 27%), making it the single most valuable piece of horse racing memorabilia ever sold at public auction. Congratulations to the winning bidder and new owner of this historic treasure.

———-

Christie's auction bidding begins TODAY (Thurs. March 12) at 5 p.m. ET for the custom-made saddle that was owned and used by Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte in winning the 1973 Triple Crown races aboard Secretariat.

Turcotte sold his special "Big Race" saddle to the Jim Irsay Collection in 2023. Following Irsay's death last year, his family made the decision to sell some of the iconic items from the collection.

Reflecting on selling his saddle at the time, Turcotte, who passed away in August 2025, said, “This special saddle represents a most magical time in my racing career, and its personal significance to me and my family goes beyond words. I’ve had the privilege of keeping it safe and secure for nearly 50 years, and now it’s time to let others enjoy the treasures in my collection as well."
