Have you seen the Painted Lady Butterflies flying around town???? No those are not leaves, they are butterflies! SO what exactly is going on?⁣⠀

The Painted Lady Butterflies are migrating from Northern Mexico. They are passing through our region and will finish their migration in the Oregon and Washington areas, and even go as far as Canada to lay their eggs.⁣⠀
-⁣⠀
In times of drought, they β€œhang out” as pupa (an insect in its inactive immature form between larva and adult) waiting for lots of rain. And when lots of rain comes, that means abundant food supply, and they figure it’s a good time to become adults. Hence the big emergence! ⁣⠀
-⁣⠀
They aren’t stopping or lingering too much in Orange County, most are making a beeline North. However, some will stop to rest on hot stones, drink water, feed, and lay eggs. They lay eggs on plants in the Mallow family, specifically Hollyhocks and Sidalcea, both of which we have available in-store!⁣⠀

They will be around for roughly a week longer. Experts say there are about 1 Billion of them!⁣⠀

The Splendor 🌴 From Mark Girardeau while aboard ❄️ Sea to the mountains! Today we had incredible views of the snow capped mountains, seen here is Balboa Pier and Mt. Baldy with a plane taking off from John Wayne Airport. Lots of gray whales today even with the rough conditions. πŸ™
