Tidbits for today....

* The Fed’s September rate cut brought the benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 4.75% and 5%. Economists in a Wall Street Journal October survey see this rate at 4.4% at the end of this year, implying two further, quarter-point moves. In the July survey, economists had predicted this rate would be 4.9% at the close of 2024. The 10-year treasury slipped back to 4% yesterday.... (WSJ)

* In the decade through 2020, the U.S. population overall grew 7.4% but rose 10.2% in the South and 9.2% in the West. (WSJ)

* Around the US, 290,000 new properties were built in high-risk flood areas from 2019 through 2023, almost 20% of the 1.6 million built in total in that period. (First Street)

* Certain victims of Hurricanes and other natural disasters can amend 2023 returns to claim a tax break for recent losses, known as the “casualty loss tax deduction.” The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 temporarily restricted eligibility so only losses in federally declared disaster areas will qualify through 2025. Who knew??
The number of people killed in traffic collisions in the US fell by almost 4% in 2023 BUT the mortality rate on US roads is still 25% in the past decade and TRIPLE the rate of the average developed country. This is attributed mostly to the fact that US drivers drive longer distances, own bigger cars, and car-addiction: 63% of US residents will drive a 1-mile trip instead of walk.
But it is distracted drivers from tech/phone use, alcohol and not wearing seatbelts that fuels this most. We are all tempted, but don't pick up your phone while driving!
While some in the media broadcast that everyone is being killed on subways in New York City, New York actually has the second lowest commuter fatality rate in the US (FT)
