You never know how much damage a major storm might do. Assume city water has been contaminated after a hurricane. Do not drink tap water until local officials declare it safe to drink.

The general rule is to be prepared for 3 to 21 days. Stock up on one gallon of water per person per day. Consider filling up a bathtub right before the storm hits.

Invest in a water purifier (removes bacteria / parasites / viruses) and water storage containers for drinking.

HURRICANES : Power outage - Electronics and communications

*Keep computer files and operating systems backed up regularly. Consider buying extra batteries and a power converter if you use a laptop computer. A power converter allows most laptops (12 volts or less) to be operated from the cigarette lighter of a vehicle. Turn off all electronic devices when not in use. If power goes out, this equipment will have already been safely shut down.

*Get a high quality surge protector. If you use the computer a lot, such as for a home business, consider purchasing and installing an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).

Hurricanes: below are a couple of tips to help you out during a power outage!

*Freeze water in plastic containers and place in refrigerator/freezer. This will help keep food cold by displacing air that can warm up quickly with water/ice that keeps cold for several hours.

*Electric garage door opener – find out where the manual release lever is located and learn how to operate it. Older garage doors can be heavy so get help to lift it. If this is your primary means of entry, be sure to keep a key to your house in case the garage door will not open.
