On Tuesday, August 6, from 6 – 9 p.m., the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) and City of Lake Charles will host a free National Night Out Community Event at the Lake Charles Event Center (900 Lakeshore Dr.).

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Officers from the Department and view demonstrations from the various divisions. LCPD will be joined by numerous other local agencies for equipment displays and more. Free resources and information from a variety of vendors will also be available.

National Night Out will also feature a jambalaya and pastalaya cook-off, with free servings for the community while supplies last, activities for children, giveaways and more. Fun jumps, a car show and food trucks for concession purchases will round out the National Night Out celebration.

“Our National Night Out Community Event provides citizens with the opportunity to meet and interact with Officers from our many divisions in one location, while gathering important information about a variety of resources available to them,” said Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell. “It’s a chance for us to hear citizen concerns and allows us to build stronger police-community relationships.”

Communities nationwide host National Night Out events on the first Tuesday of August every year with the goal of enhancing the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement by bringing residents and police officers together under positive circumstances.

Additional sponsors of LCPD’s National Night Out Community Event include Albertson’s, Coca Cola, Lake Area Adventures, Lake Charles Event Center and Target.

SHERIFF GUILLORY WARNS CITIZENS OF SCAM REPORTED IN OUR AREA

Lake Charles, LA –

Sheriff Gary “Stitch” Guillory is warning area residents of a scam that continuously surfaces in our area.

Victims report receiving a phone call stating they have missed jury duty, and they have fees associated with their absence that must be paid. The caller may claim to be a deputy with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and use a name of a current CPSO deputy. They instruct the victim to either purchase a prepaid card or make a payment using a Bitcoin kiosk to void the warrant and avoid arrest.

THIS IS A SCAM! Sheriff Guillory wants residents to know that under no circumstance will a deputy ever ask for money or any form of payment in lieu of missing jury duty or for an active warrant.

Sheriff Guillory wants to remind residents of a few tips to use to avoid becoming a victim of a scam:
•Resist the pressure to make an immediate decision. Fraudsters create a sense of urgency to get you to act quickly.
•Verify the legitimacy of the request and information before sending any money
•Never send money based on a request made over the phone or in an e-mail.

“These scammers are preying on fear and urgency, threatening arrest if you are non-compliant,” stated Sheriff Guillory. “There are several warning signs to look for to spot a scam and possibly save yourself from becoming a victim. Be wary if the requester is asking you for personal information or bank account numbers. The suspect will normally ask for payment via wire transfers or gift cards and may direct you to not tell anyone and to stay on the phone until the transactions are complete. Always verify requests through official channels before taking any action.”

The City of Lake Charles is celebrating National Kids to Parks Day this Saturday, May 18, and is inviting the community to join in on the fun with a citywide Park Scavenger Hunt!

Each year, the National Park Trust celebrates National Kids to Parks Day on the third Saturday of May. The day is meant to inspire outdoor play, connecting kids and families with their local recreation facilities.

In celebration of this decades-old tradition, the City of Lake Charles Recreation and Parks Department has developed a citywide park scavenger hunt that promises free fun for the entire family.

The scavenger hunt is designed for families to proceed at their own pace, beginning at 10 a.m. with the first clue being issued at Hillcrest Park (2808 Hillcrest Dr.). Park attendants will be on site at each park along the way, ready to issue the next clue!

The Citywide Scavenger Hunt will conclude at Historic City Hall (1001 Ryan St.) with a family-friendly celebration from noon – 1 p.m. Prizes and refreshments will be available.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 337-491-1280 or email [email protected].
