Industrial growth can be good for Southwest Louisiana and still create a housing problem.

When thousands of temporary workers arrive, they compete for the same rentals, houses and apartments as the people who already live here.

Rents rise. Investors pay more. Those sales become comps. And suddenly a temporary workforce can start reshaping what homes are “worth.”

Then the project ends.

The workers leave.

The rents soften.

But the mortgage, the purchase price and the comps are still there.

That is the part of the industrial boom nobody talks about enough.

Southwest Louisiana’s industrial boom is creating thousands of jobs, but temporary workforce demand can also reshape the housing market, push up rents and home prices, and leave comparable sales distorted after construction ends.

The Lake Charles Fire Department is turning 150 years old.

Founded in 1876 with horse-drawn fire wagons, the department has grown into a modern emergency-response system serving Lake Charles and the surrounding Ward 3 area.

The city will mark the anniversary with two public events in October:

Oct. 22: Historical Art Exhibit at Central School
Oct. 24: Free LCFD Family Fun Day at Millennium Park

Here’s a look at the department’s history and what’s planned for the celebration.

LCFD will mark its 150th anniversary with two public events in October, including a historical exhibit and free Family Fun Day.

A company plans to inject roughly 19 million metric tons of CO2 beneath Cameron Parish over 30 years.

The wells themselves are easy to locate.

The harder question is who owns the underground space the CO2 is expected to occupy.

Project Minerva's permit records identify Stream-family property at the injection site — but the project's Area of Review crosses numerous separately owned tracts.

Louisiana law now has an 85% rule for what happens when a carbon-storage unit crosses property lines.

We went into the permits, landowner records and state law.
