Environmental Psychology: The Relationship Between You and Your Home
We often talk about our homes in terms of design: how they look, how they function and whether the spaces work for us.
But there is another question I find far more interesting:
How does your home make you feel?
Environmental psychology explores the relationship between people and the physical environments they inhabit. Research has examined how aspects of our surroundings, including space, privacy, light, noise and environmental conditions, relate to how we experience the places in which we live.
For me, this connects with something I have observed throughout my years working with homes.
A room can look perfectly considered and still not feel right for the person living in it.
Equally, a space that was never consciously designed as a place to relax can become the place where someone naturally settles at the end of the day.
That relationship between person and place is what interests me.
It is also at the heart of my book, Is Your Home Still Your Castle?, where I invite the reader to look beyond design and start with the person living inside the home.
Because perhaps the most important thing to ask of a home is not “Does it look right?” but “Does it feel right for me?”
I just published an article about Enironmental Psychology, you can read it here if interested: https://www.monikagriffith.com/post/environmental-psychology-the-relationship-between-you-and-your-home
