Some advice from your local maintenance man about the upcoming storm:
Be sure your furnace filter is clean.
Check batteries in your thermostat(if so equipped).
Be sure the water is turned off to your exterior hoses.
If the power goes out, turn off the water at the water meter. Open the faucets inside and let the water out to prevent freeze-up. When power comes back on, turn water on slowly with faucets open and go thru the house listening for leaks. Traps may be frozen if it’s been bad, be aware of this, too.
If it looks like it’ll be a few days of severe cold, consider emptying your hot water tank. Be sure to turn off the breaker so you don’t damage it when the power comes back on before you do.
You may use a gas oven safely for supplemental heat if it’s a pilot light style, just open the oven door. Most modern stoves, however, require electrical to start.
Kerosene can be dangerous and should not be used for heat in a home with sleeping people.
NEVER PUT GENERATORS INSIDE, INCLUDING ATTACHED GARAGES!
Also, get out and shovel your walks! You need the exercise!
Thanks, and be safe out there!
