I remember exactly where I was when the first plane hit.

Twenty-five years have passed, and with time, even the moments we thought we could never forget begin to feel distant.

But this day should never become just another date on the calendar.

Today, take a moment. Remember the lives lost. Remember the families whose lives changed forever. Remember the first responders who ran toward danger when everyone else was trying to escape.

Lesson 39: The tree. It has to be real.

And by “the tree”, I mean my Christmas tree. In fact, a Frasier Fir, if we’re being specific.

When I moved to Florida, I thought maybe I could become a fake Christmas tree person.

Mostly out of necessity.

So I tried it.

And I hated it.

I've learned that there are some things about myself that are just not changing.

I will have a real Christmas tree in my house for as long as I'm physically able to drag the damn thing through the front door.

I don't care that the bottom branches don't get decorated because the cats mistake the ornaments for toys.
I don't care that I have to water it.
I don't care that they've become ridiculously expensive (NBD, I’ll eat lighter).
I don't care that I'll still find random pine needles in July.
I don’t care that my hands are sticky with sap after decorating it.

I love the smell the second it comes through the front door.

I love the way it transforms the whole house.

I love that my kitties immediately decide it belongs to them.

Could I live with a fake tree?

Sure. I guess. If I had to. I mean, I did. 🤷‍♀️

I already proved that.

I just don't want to.

I have learned that some things aren't meant to be changed.

Lesson 38: Don't wait for someone else to buy you flowers.

Seriously.

Why did it take me so long to figure this out?

I love fresh flowers. Tulips in the spring. Wildflower bouquets from the Farmers Market. Sunflowers in late summer. If I leave the Farmers Market with nothing else, I know I'm coming home with flowers.

For years, I waited for someone else to buy them FOR me.

Why?

I mean, they're FLOWERS.

If they make me happy, why would I leave that up to someone else?

Of COURSE I love it when someone surprises me with flowers. I mean, that lights up my whole day.

But if I want flowers on my table, I don't wait anymore.

I buy the damn flowers.

Lesson 37: Good health is about more than diet and exercise.

Well, I’ve gone through seasons of running, biking, kayaking, yoga, and finding new ways to keep moving. Physical health has become important to me. ⁠

And that didn’t happen overnight - I wasn’t raised with this mindset. ⁠
⁠
It was about 13-15 years ago. My mindset around this changed dramatically when I started hanging out with the right people.⁠
⁠
Believe me, I have a LOT of opportunity to be better in this department. But I do try. ⁠
⁠
Interestingly, in 2015, I chose Health as my “one word” for the year.⁠
⁠
That year taught me something I hadn't fully understood before.⁠
⁠
Health isn't JUST about your body.⁠
⁠
It's also about your mind.⁠
⁠
Your emotions.⁠
⁠
Your finances.⁠
⁠
Your relationships.⁠
⁠
Your stress level.⁠
⁠
Your sleep.⁠
⁠
Your sense of purpose.⁠
⁠
Because when one of those areas is struggling, it has a way of affecting the others.⁠
⁠
You can be physically fit and emotionally exhausted.⁠
⁠
Financially secure and mentally overwhelmed.⁠
⁠
Or eating all the right foods while completely neglecting your own peace.⁠
⁠
I've learned that good health is about taking care of your WHOLE person.⁠
⁠
Because all of those pieces work together.⁠

This one started in Madison and ended right here in Eau Claire. ❤️

On Monday, I had the privilege of closing on a home for buyers who were referred to me by a fellow Wisconsin real estate agent in the Madison area.

And that’s one of the things I love about this business:
GOOD AGENTS KNOW GOOD AGENTS.

Lesson 36: Never underestimate a good night's sleep...and cozy pajamas.

Oh man, I miss this little girl.

Not because I want to be a kid again.

But because I want to sleep like she did. 😴

I remember those flannel pajamas. They were one of my favorite pairs. Perfectly worn in and super cozy.

I also remember climbing into bed, falling asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, and waking up feeling like a million bucks.

Nobody warned me that one day that would end.
Nobody warned me that one day I would appreciate sleep so much.

These days, if I get five uninterrupted hours of sleep, I wake up feeling like I've won the damn lottery.

And those cozy flannel pajamas?

Forget it.

Menopause had other plans.

Now it's a perfectly worn-in, oversized cotton T-shirt and hope for the best. 😆

I've also learned that "comfortable" looks very different than it did when I was younger.

Back then, comfort meant flannel pajamas and a blue teddy bear.

Today it means comfy sweats, a well-worn T-shirt, fuzzy socks ...and absolutely nothing restrictive when it's time to sleep.

Comfort wins.

Every.

Single.

Time.

Sometimes a house has a story that comes full circle. 💫

When Anna bought 1725 Timber Trail, this home represented a new chapter in her life. And this week, as she handed over the keys, I couldn't help but think about how fitting it is that this home gets to be part of another new beginning.

I won't share the details because those stories aren't mine to tell. But I will say this: sometimes the right home comes along at exactly the right time.

For one person, it's time to move forward.

For another, it's a place to begin again.

And there's something pretty special about getting to stand in the middle of that. ❤️
