A recent ranking that measured growth in U.S. cities and towns with a population of 20,000 or more people placed Leesburg third in the nation on a list of fastest-growing cities by percentage increase. The population grew by 18.5% between July 2023 and July 2024, well ahead of the 12.1% rate of growth in Haines City, the only other Florida municipality to make the list in sixth place. Four Texas cities rounded out the top 5 spots, and the only other states represented in the top 10 were Alabama, Minnesota and North Carolina.

The rate of population growth over a longer time horizon is even more substantial, with the number of residents in Leesburg growing by nearly 90% since 2010, with nearly 40% of that occurring since 2020. The city’s growth is augmented by people moving from The Villages and the southern part of Lake County, as well as those relocating from adjacent Orlando-area counties in search of more affordable housing and a slower pace of life.

In fact, five out of the top 10 fastest-growing cities in Central Florida, based on total population change from 2020 to 2024, are in Lake County. In addition to top-ranked Leesburg, Minneola, Mascotte, and Groveland all expanded by more than 30% during that period, while the much smaller city of Astatula grew by 19.3%. Cities in Brevard, Osceola and Volusia counties rounded out the remaining cities on the list. The largest was Daytona Beach, where the population increased by 19% between 2020 and 2024.

Moving forward, Leesburg’s development map indicates there are another 40,000 potential new homes, townhouses and apartments already permitted. That provides a long runway for growth in the years ahead.

What a wonderful time and an even better cause. We had a blast eating, drinking, dancing, and most importantly raising money to support the battle against children's cancer with BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation.
