Headed to the capital to hear from Governor Kotek, Secretary of State candidate Tobias Read, and to learn about both measure 118(hard no!) and ranked choice voting (I’m intrigued). Ultimately, I’m not unhappy with Kotek choosing increasing housing as her term’s top priority. I’d rather have an elected official focus on one key marker to improve life in our state than try to be everything to everyone. For Secretary of State (2nd in line to governor), I don’t think Tobias Read is right for the job. I got the sense it would be more of the same under him- inefficient use of hard earned tax dollars and a focus for him to further his political career rather than change things up. I’ll be voting for Dennis Linthicum who has a stated focus of auditing departments known to underperform. Measure 118 proposes a $6.8billion tax on Oregon businesses with over $25m in gross receipts- not profit, not income, gross sales! It’s a sneaky sales tax that ALL Oregonians will pay for in inflation, higher cost of goods, and will make Oregon business climate less competitive. Hard no for me! Finally, learned about ranked choice voting and I tentatively like it. How it will roll out is tbd, but if we are doing experimental things in govt. I’d rather it’s ranked choice than something like measure 118.

I am so frustrated by how small the vision of Chair Vega Pedersen is. She has multiple proposals that could be put into place THIS YEAR, but she recommends plans that take years to build, cost millions of dollars, and essentially assume people on the streets can only aspire to tiny houses and sub-poverty style housing like tiny homes (worst use of money ever). She’s ignoring the massive need to provide ample sobering beds and immediate treatment. 8 beds??? 8 sobering beds???? This is why I get so frustrated. I have this lovely plan of “hotel detox” where we manage acute detox in a hotel situation for around a week before sending people to amazing, life rebuilding camps where they can instantly start working, contributing and still live a nature based camping lifestyle. The cost for room and board works out to around $50/day for my plan and can shelter 1000. We don’t need to build anything (takes place at existing and vacant summer camps), it’s temporary- no permanent infrastructure needed because the slump many find themselves in is also TEMPORARY, and so much more cost effective!! Also- we shouldn’t build a damn thing downtown. There’s vacancies everywhere!!! We need recliners and little partitions for privacy on the main floor; detox upstairs. We need HOSPITALITY best practices to welcome people off the street, sit them in a comfortable place, and take care of their immediate needs in a way where they won’t want to go back out on the street. I know it’s a hard pill to swallow, but I’m a pragmatist. We need to offer a service ladder that is MORE ATTRACTIVE than life on the street. JVP is missing the mark once again! And while I should be happy she’s throwing $$$ at some projects, nothing feels designed to end this crisis. Anytime you’re investing millions in building out sites, you’re saying to our homeless- this is the best you can expect. We are keeping them disenfranchised instead of bringing them back in. Ugh!!! So frustrated. Still trying to get my voice heard on my solid plan. Still so disappointed in the lack of courage and squandering of millions. Not going to give up!

I had the opportunity to wish Damian Lillard farewell today as he heads off to join the Milwaukee Bucks. Lillard leaving feels so emblematic of many Oregonians who have reached the breaking point of frustration, thrown their hands up and left the place they call home. The Portland Trail Blazers management couldn’t or wouldn’t build a team around Lillard, who showed incredible leadership and loyalty for 11 years. It comes down to the management not having the courage (and/or maybe the funds) to stand behind our star and make bold moves necessary to get us into a position to win. Their fear, and lack of action, led to his departure. It’s a sad day for Blazer fans- we all know he deserves a winning team, but it’ll take a while to get over the sting of his departure. I’m a huge fan of Lillard and a life long Blazer fan. To paraphrase his farewell song, yes, what he left is better than what he inherited; and as a fan “I will remember all the things I got to sit and witness.”

Call to action! Please fill out the survey linked in my bio and in the “other suggestions” write in something to the effect of “have Megan Pozos present on her recommendations to end the homeless crisis”. Please write me in by name! I’m working all the angles to get a seat at the table and effect major change. This is a call to action to turn things around before more money is thrown at policies that aren’t helping anyone!

Reminiscing about the great road trips I took around our state this summer visiting natural wonders such as Smith Rock, the Wallowa Mountains, the Painted Hills and the Oregon coast. Oregon truly is a land of abundance and beauty. The small town communities like Pendleton, Joseph, John Day have rich storied histories and tightly knit communities. I’m from a small town, Stayton, and it never fails to amaze me how our community steps up for each other in times of need. In 2020, we had huge wildfires that caused major devastation with homes, businesses, and natural wonders destroyed. The communities rallied together in an amazing show of support. People were helping neighbors evacuate animals, others were braving encroaching flames to help with evacuations. It was an EMERGENCY and required immediate, life saving help. Our government officials have declared a homeless/unhoused emergency- but it’s only on paper. How about we treat this emergency with the same urgency? With my clear plan to eradicate homelessness, we can rally communities to help transform our city streets and get our citizens into the stability required for a properly functioning society. Give me 90 days of full support and I’ll give you a problem solved. I know you’ll show up for this when the moment arrives. Now- can anyone get me in front of Gov. Kotek so I can share my plan with her and her buy in from the top?

When a citizen has an episode, drug induced or mental health, in Copenhagen, Denmark- there’s a swift response from local officials to ensure that citizen’s well being as well as keeping those citizens in the vicinity safe as well. Seems so simple, yet, here in Portland and throughout Oregon, this isn’t our reality. It’s not fair to those struggling and it’s certainly not fair to everyone else whose sense of safety and security is impacted by an indifference to the adherence of laws and standards. We aren’t suffering from a lack of money or resources. We simply need to return to tried and true social standards. Camping is for campgrounds. All citizens need to abide by the laws that keep us safe. And a certain decorum is required in day to day living: like- not menacing people, not using drugs in public, and not defecating on the streets or destroying private or public property. I don’t think I’m alone in these beliefs or extreme in what I’m asking/expecting. Let’s shift our expectations and what we accept from everyone in society. To expect less is a disservice to all. Our social services are abundant, but they aren’t being effectively utilized by those in need because we’ve lowered the standard of what we will accept. In many ways, we find ourselves in a socialist government structure: taxes, expectations of social services, etc. however, we differ because while we’ve adopted the socialism model on paper, our strict American individualism prevents us from actually getting the buy in of those in need. I’m happy we are set up to support those who are struggling, but we must also ask for them to contribute- through being accountable and using our robust systems to help themselves. If you’re a parent, you’re nodding your head. If you let your kid eat Cheetos and do iPad all day, that’s what they’ll do. If you give them structure and set clear expectations and natural consequences- you’ll see their behavior elevate. I’m not being condescending here, I’m just looking at it with common sense. We need to expect more from our struggling citizens; they will rise to the occasion. Or head somewhere else.

A lot of the issues plaguing us today seem insurmountable. How do we solve homelessness, drug addiction, the epidemic of loneliness? Guess what- the answer is simpler than you may think. Show up! Give of yourself- your time, your energy, your dollars. Call a friend to meet for lunch and try a new restaurant. Check out a new boutique. Your presence, your patronage- is all that’s needed to move the needle in the right direction. And guess what- you can have fun while doing it! We don’t have to have a complex plan to solve the issues. Right now, all I ask of you is to just show up for our city and our state. It’ll make all the difference.
