The Saranac Lake Ice Palace—Then & Now: They’ve been building an “Ice Palace” for the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival for over 125 years. This year’s version, a Cartoonival theme, is pretty much completed and ready for the start of this year’s festival this weekend. More than 2400 ice blocks, each about 19 inches in length, were used to construct the palace. The ice blocks were harvested on site on the northern edge of Lake Flower there—some of the best, thickest ice they’ve had in years due to the brutal cold. Dozens of Saranac Lake area folks volunteered, as they always do—a labor of love in often frigid conditions. IPW 101, Ice Palace Workers 101, delivers yet another beauty! Fitting that on Saturday, first full day of the carnival—complete with fireworks—it’s expected to snow with the low temp being -16° Saturday night into Sunday, wind chill about -30°. The carnival runs through Sunday, February 15th.
