BOUNDARY ADJUSTMENT...The WSD Board of Education has approved a boundary adjustment that will affect Discovery Ridge and Prairie View elementary attendance areas beginning next fall. The change will affect the Briarchase, Sommers Landing and Belmonte Landing subdivisions along Highway N in Lake Saint Louis that are currently part of the Discovery Ridge Elementary (DRE) attendance area. Students in grades K-6 in those neighborhoods will attend Prairie View Elementary beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.

Last year, when the Boundary Committee recommendation for new K-6 attendance areas across the WSD was made to the Board of Education, it came with a caveat that the Discovery Ridge attendance area would still be a concern. It is the fastest growing school in the fastest growing district in the state. At the same time the Board of Education voted to approve the K-6 boundaries, they also voted to add eight classrooms to Prairie View Elementary school located on Feise Road, which was one of the District’s smallest schools. The addition to Prairie View was completed in November and increases that school’s capacity from 750 to 900 students. Last year, Discovery Ridge Elementary had over 1,000 students in grades K-5 in a school designed to hold 900 students. This year, even after the shift to K-6 and adjustments across the District with the addition of two new elementary schools, DRE enrollment is at 925 students. Without the addition and subsequent boundary shift, DRE was predicted to have 991 students next year.

“We want to assure each of you that changing attendance areas for schools is not something the District takes lightly as we recognize students and families have strong ties to their school communities,” said Superintendent Dr. Curtis Cain in a letter to affected families. “We are proud of our reputation for being a sought-after school district, but with that comes the challenges of providing adequate space for all students who move within the 89-square miles of the WSD. Building schools, adding classrooms and adjusting school boundaries are all part of the work we do on a regular basis. As a result, we have also learned a great deal about what helps a child successfully transition from one school to another. Quite honestly, the key to making this work is our partnership with you. We are committed to working with you to ensure your child feels supported, welcomed, and loved in their new school environment. This is who we are - the heart of the WSD - and it is what shapes our special and successful learning environment for all students.”
