Tina Stolatis, a student member of and a member of the ESG committee offered a presentation at the Mt. Pleasant NY public library titled “Sustainability in the Garden”. Tina shared advice and guidance on starting a garden from seeds, how to set up a nutrient rich garden bed, and techniques on introducing natural fertilizers in lieu of using chemicals. She emphasized the global sustainability principles of reduce, re-use and recycle to minimize negative environmental impacts. Re-purposing common household materials, such as paper towel tubes to create seed-starter pots and using cardboard instead of plastic sheets as w**d blockers, enables each garden to reduce its environmental footprint while helping to generate healthy and nutritious fruits and vegetables. Equally important, these practices will also save money. Tina spoke to the importance of composting to minimize the organic waste stream, a major source of methane emissions in garbage dumps. She shared some advice on how to maintain even a small basic compost pile at home. Tina expanded on the environmental benefits of a home garden by encouraging the audience to consider donating their excess abundance to local food banks. Sharing healthy produce with others is a social imperative that helps to overcome the food insecurity that many in our communities suffer from.

IREM NYC applauds Tina and her commitment to environmental and social objectives to make our world a better place. Our chapter is dedicated to promoting best practices through its members and the broader community.

There’s nothing we like better than installing newly certified members into our organization, and that’s exactly what we had the honor of doing last night at our annual cocktail party at 230 Fifth Penthouse and Rooftop. With a crowd of over 100 intently listening, IREM NYC’s chapter president Randall E. Powell, CPM®, ARM®, RPA® read Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM)’s Code of Professional Ethics and The Ferrara Management Group’s Antonio Barone, CPM®; Dawn Lombardo, CPM® and Alexis Ferrara, CPM® and Related Management Company’s Lisa Harrell, ARM® officially became certified members of IREM. A big cheer erupted and a celebrated ensued. IREM NYC’s soon-to-be 2025 chapter president Jessica Tusing, ARM®, CPM® and IREM VP of chapter activites are also pictured.

On Saturday morning, members of IREM NYC volunteered with Green City Force (GFC) at Forest Houses Eco-Hub in the Bronx. GCF trains young leaders to power a green and inclusive economy, through service. Their model corps in New York City enlists and trains young people from low-income housing communities for a new and more equitable economy. They equip them with the tools to change the trajectory of their lives and access good jobs. Corps Members develop a passion for sustainability and service through driving large-scale environmental and health initiatives in public housing and other frontline communities. They design service as a path to greater wellbeing and means to enlist young people to become contributors and leaders in the movement to build a greener, fairer, and more just world.

We spent the morning harvesting crops—kale, potatoes, string beans, radishes, arugula, basil, dill, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant and chard. In all we picked nearly 200 pounds of produce!

All produce grown and harvested at the Eco-Hub is made available to local residents free of charge at their market on Saturdays at noon.
