In the summer of 1916, disaster struck the mountains of Western North Carolina.

After days of relentless rainfall, the original earthen dam at Lake Toxaway gave way, sending billions of gallons of water rushing downstream in one of the region's most devastating floods. Entire communities were affected, bridges were swept away, and the Grand Toxaway Inn's golden era came to an abrupt end.
