Do you know why we actually celebrate it?

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, but the first Labor Day celebration happened 12 years earlier in New York City.

Back then, many Americans worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week, often in pretty rough conditions. 😳 The growing labor movement pushed for better hours, safer workplaces and, apparently, the radical idea that people might occasionally need a day off.

President Grover Cleveland officially made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894, and we’ve been celebrating the American worker ever since.

So if you’re off today, enjoy the day your 1890s counterparts would have VERY much appreciated. 😂

And if you’re working today, we appreciate you. ❤️🇺🇸
