Since the National Association of Realtors settlement on buyer agent fees, I have received questions from clients, family, and friends on my opinion. I thought I would share it with you here. Since actions speak, louder than words, I will tell you MY story.
In 2014, I was a top producing real estate agent in both North Carolina and South Carolina, having sold over $100 million in real estate in both states. I wanted to purchase a home in the North Carolina mountains. I wasn’t a member of the MLS there and I was not familiar with the area, but it would have been legal for me to represent myself and make an additional $6,750 in buyers agent commission for myself. Even with the thousands of transactions I had negotiated, I knew I was not a real estate EXPERT in the area. I hired a buyer’s agent. Not only did I not make the extra $6750 to represent myself, I paid $6750 for my agent. She was worth every penny.
