This 34’x46’ modified story and a half in Hamburg, Mn served as a church rectory and youth education center for many years until the church decided it was time for an upgrade. Instead of demolishing the house they elected to allow it to be moved. This style of home is normally not all that heavy but this being a church rectory, you had to add what we refer to as the “ nobody wants to cheat the lord” factor. Which mean, in our experiences over the years, church rectories tend to be very heavily built and everything seems to be done to the maxx which adds weight. This one was heavy enough that we decided to add a second set of axels before the move. The move was flawless and went very smoothly.

Everyone always asks about pole buildings. Can they be moved? Yes, they can be moved but they take a lot more equipment than a home. With the amount of beams used to move a pole barn, I could load 4-5 houses. Big open buildings that need to be supported around the perimeter, take some big steel to keep the buildings straight. How far can the me moved and what are the limitations? That all depends on the size of the building and the landscape around it. Most major roads can handle 30 feet fairly easily unless the trees are overgrown. Unfortunately, most barns are over 30’. That’s were we need to be creative. We start looking at fields and alternate routes.
This particular building is 50’x80’ and had to be move about a mile in Jordan, Mn. It absolutely did not fit down the roads. We were able to travel across the fields until we were in the new owners yard where he already had the foundation prepared and were able to put it right into its final position.

This is a project that we did in Northfield for Schmidt Homes Inc and Habitat for Humanity. Relocating the house and garage within the development and saving it from demolition. Although it looks nice and dry in the photos, weather was not our friend on this one. Seems like it rained on every day that we had scheduled to work on this one.

Sometimes, we run across a project where we have to drive the house off the basement. In the case, we drove the house off of an 8 foot foundation until we were clear of the walls and could set down onto the wheels. This is not common for us to do. Normally we would slide the house sideways and set the wheels after we are totally clear of the basement.

This fun little cabin near Kellogg, Mn on the Mississippi River, has been flooding on a regular basis every spring. The home owners, tired of having to remove furniture and belongings every year to protect them from the raising water, decided that they wanted to take steps to protect their building from the high spring floods. Because of where the house is located, all the equipment had to be hauled in by bobcat for almost a quarter of a mile. We were able to get underneath the house, it was tight, little or no room for beams much less a person, and get a good hold of the lift points to raise the house. We lifted the house up so that 8’ tall piers could be installed underneath. It is always interesting when working in the sandy soils along the river banks. Steps had to be taken to prevent the undermining and collapse of the soils underneath the crib stacks holding up the house. Everything when smoothly.

This 28x82 foot rambler came out of Twin outlets park in Sherburne county. There were concerns about the possibilities of tribal burial grounds and no digging was allowed. Moving a house like this with an attached garage is a lot simpler if you can dig out the garage slab first. Since this was not an option, we decided to take off the 24x24 garage and move the house 28x58 in two pieces. We also moved a 28x36 secondary garage off this same property. All three pieces were relocated to a property just outside the town of Palmer Mn.

This is a 28x42 foot rambler we saved out of Roseville Mn. This house was in an area that was difficult to get out of. We had to cross the center median curbs over 20 times to avoid the stop lights along the route. We use a series of wood build up to get the wheels up onto and back off of the curbs of the medians. It is not always fun to crawl under and set these “ramps” in place at night when we are moving. At least it wasn’t raining on this move.

We often purchase houses that are in the way of road expansion. In this case, we purchased 5 houses in Wadena Mn and in the process of getting them from the state, the state removed all of what they would consider hazardous waste. The company that did said removal damaged this house to the point that we didn’t even list if for sale until we had a chance to go through it and make it a like new home. So into the warehouse it went and we took it down to bones. Framing brought up to code, new roof, soffit, windows and siding and it is a different house coming back out. We normally do this in the winter when it is too cold to be outside. Ten below outside, 60 degrees in the warehouse. I know where I would rather be.
