Every day I see posts on Social Media from the Real Estate industry that show how broken the system is. Today was a post from an exceedingly popular Industry page that simply stated:

"The neediest client is your buyer with the smallest budget who has no intention of ever writing an offer”

This is an example of the type of responses you see from Agent’s on this type of client:

“Maybe their negative thinking is also why they have a low budget. No gratitude no grace! And they want the house to be completely updated with all the bells and whistles”

Every client deserves the same attention and respect—regardless of their budget.

The fact that Agents believe that they can make these comments (even in generality) about Clients publicly on Social Media is mind-blowing. But even more unsettling is the sheer volume of comments just like this one that we hear online and even in real life. One of the reasons the real estate industry’s stereotype sits alongside bankers, insurance agents, and used car dealers is simple: too many agents drastically overvalue their own time and undervalue the client experience. Commission has been the focus instead of service. There is value beyond commission. When every conversation begins and ends with the agent’s needs, the system is broken.

The Client’s needs come first. Always. Whether it is in your own best interests or not. If you chose to take on a client because you could lock them into a contract, that was your decision. Once you realize the transaction will not be as easy as others, you do not get to complain. Find value in the showings. Call it market research. Call it client service. That patience is the job.

Because when you finally help that buyer find the right home, they will not remember how hard it was, they will remember how you treated them. And they will tell their friends. This business is not about the agent. You provide a service. You are selling the service.

You are the product.

It is about the person buying the product and paying you at the end of the transaction.
