If giving compliments make you feel good, then I figure felon Trump must be miserable because he rarily gives compliments and when he does it is usually because he has been successful at coercing someone to do something he wants. He is great at giving out negative remarks and tagging people with uncomplimentary descriptions.

Mary Ellen Pleasant parlayed a substantial inheritance from her first husband into an incredible fortune, estimated at $30 million in 1875 ($812 million in 2022 dollars) that included at least eight properties around the Bay Area. After arriving in San Francisco during California’s gold rush, she started investing quietly through intermediaries. Her business partnerships with White men allowed her to fly below the radar lending money and trading the silver that she purchased. Eventually, she would purchase and build a number of properties, some that would become lucrative investments as high-end boarding houses. Pleasant initially hid her wealth, working as a cook and housekeeper.

She is also known as the mother of California civil rights. Among the many ways that she worked to open doors for people from marginalized groups, she harbored formerly enslaved people, offering job training and placement. It is also believed that she helped fund John Brown’s failed attempt to foment a slave uprising by overtaking Harpers Ferry. In a win widely celebrated in San Francisco’s Black community, her lawsuit against the city's streetcar companies led to a court ruling that they could no longer exclude people of color on the basis of their race.
