I'm just 18 days away from closing on my "new" 126-year-old home, and I'm already planning its first restoration project.
At one time, the house had a room attached to the rear, where there is now a concrete patio. The outline of the original roofline is still visible on the brick, so there's good evidence that the addition once existed. I'd like to rebuild that space and include a laundry area and a half bath, while making it look as though it has always belonged to the house.
My question is for those with experience restoring historic homes:
If you were building this addition today, what exterior materials would you choose besides brick to keep it historically appropriate? I'd love to hear what has worked well on homes of this era.
