Especially because of the smoke today - consider using your recirculation button in your car. The air recirculation button in your car stops outside air from entering the cabin and instead recirculates the air already inside. Usually marked by a U-turn arrow inside a car silhouette, it is best used in summer to cool the car down faster and in heavy traffic to block exhaust fumes.
How It Works
When the recirculation mode is on, your vehicle's air conditioning (A/C) system continuously re-cools the air that is already inside the cabin rather than constantly pulling in sweltering outside air. This cools the vehicle down much faster, puts less strain on the A/C compressor, and slightly improves fuel economy or electric vehicle range.
When to Use It
Hot Summer Days: Combine it with your A/C to drop the interior temperature rapidly.
Traffic, Smog, and Wildfire Smoke: Blocks or limits external odors, exhaust fumes, and poor air quality from entering.
Pollen Season: Keeps allergens from continuously being pulled into the car.
When to Avoid It
Winter and Cold Weather: Recirculating air traps moisture (from your breath) inside the vehicle, leading to severe and rapid window fogging.
When Windows are Fogged: To clear a misty windshield, turn recirculation off to introduce fresh, dry outside air.
During Stale Air: Leaving it on indefinitely can cause the cabin air to feel stuffy and deplete oxygen levels, which may cause drowsiness.
After the Car Has Been Sitting in the Sun: For the fastest cooling, drive for the first minute with the windows down and recirculation off to vent the trapped hot air, then switch it on.
