My decoy and I spent 5 hours sitting in the woods yesterday. Gratiot Saginaw State Game Area was the location. Both spots we tried had the look, the food sources, and the previous sign that turkeys had been there. But nobody wanted to come and say Hi to the lone hen decoy and her sassy calls.
The first area we hunted was located off what I thought was a nice quiet country paved road. I had no idea 1.3 million vehicles traveled that road at 9am. It was almost like hunting along a major freeway. Lol We saw lots of tweety birds and 4 deer, but no turkeys.
Second location we tried was deep in the middle of the state land. Oak ridges, winding sandy two tracks with a few turkey dusting beds, and quite a few sets of hen tracks in the trails. Spent nearly 3 hours casting out purrs, putts, and yelps through the forest. The ole hen decoy and I got nothing but the silent treatment. Other than a couple goose honks and one chipmunk it was amazingly quiet. Every once in a while I had to do a noisy sniffle just to make sure I hadn't lost all hearing. Needless to say with such lack of action and nearly complete quiet I did get some much needed naps.
Until next time.
