Important Water Update for the Lower Rio Grande!
​The New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (NMISC) is developing a new Water Rights Purchase Program to support long-term water sustainability in the region.
​Here is what you need to know:
🔹 What is it? A program offering eligible water right owners the opportunity to voluntarily sell their groundwater rights to the State. Purchased rights will be permanently retired to help reduce overall pumping.
🔹 Why? Decades of groundwater use have exceeded recharge. This program helps NM meet a legal settlement (from the Texas v. New Mexico Supreme Court case) requiring an 18,200 acre-foot reduction in groundwater depletion over the next 10 years.
🔹 Who does it impact? Local farmers, agricultural producers, and residents who rely on the long-term health of our aquifer.
