Police Encourage Steps to Prevent Motor Vehicle Theft

A 2018 Chevrolet Camaro – left running and unattended by its owner early Monday morning – was the sixth vehicle stolen in Las Cruces since Friday evening.

The gun-metal gray, convertible Camaro was stolen about 4:15 a.m. from the 2200 block of Corn Drive. The vehicle was left running and unattended to warm up. Two of the vehicles stolen this weekend were left running and unattended by their owners while one other was left with the keys inside the cab.

Through May 15, Las Cruces police have recorded 186 thefts of motor vehicles in 2021. That marks a 104 percent increase from the 91 vehicles stolen during the same time period in 2020.

Nationally, more vehicles are stolen during the summer and warm weather months than during any other season. The Las Cruces Police Department encourages owners of motor vehicles follow these tips:

• Do not leave vehicles running and unattended.
• Do not leave vehicles running, unattended and with children inside.
• Do not leave keys inside the vehicle.
• Do not loan your vehicle to someone you do not know and fully trust.
• Invest in and use an audible alarm system with an automatic kill switch that prevents vehicle from being started.
• Ensure that all windows to vehicle are etched with the Vehicle Identification Number.
• Close and lock windows and doors when leaving vehicles unattended.
• If possible, park vehicle in a garage or within a gated area.
• Do not leave keys to home, business or other properties inside your vehicle.
• Do not leave garage door remote openers in vehicle.
• Do not leave garage doors open or partially open. Entry can be gained by leaving a garage door partially open by as little as 10 inches.
• Do not leave the vehicle’s title, or personal or financial documents in vehicle.
• Do not leave fi****ms inside vehicles.
• Immediately report suspicious persons or activity in your neighborhood.
• Immediately report a stolen vehicle by calling police at (575) 526-0795 or call 911 if it’s an emergency. Be prepared to provide the make, model and color of vehicle along with the VIN and current license plate number.

Please consider your pup's safety before giving it a ride. Vehicle temperatures rise quickly in this heat and leaving a window "cracked" does little to no good in keeping a car safe for our 4-legged friends.

Consider leaving your pet home - either indoors in a temperature-controlled environment or in the backyard with plenty of shade and fresh drinking water - while you run errands.

It's not safe to leave your pet in an unattended vehicle or allow a dog to ride in the back of a pickup.

‘Spring Ahead’ Sunday and Ensure Smoke Alarms Work

Daylight saving time begins Sunday, so the Las Cruces Fire Department reminds residents to install fresh batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when they ‘spring ahead’ one hour.

Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 14, and continues until Nov. 7. Most people tend to adjust their clocks on Saturday evening before going to bed.

Las Cruces fire encourages the installation of new batteries – and manually testing all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms – at least twice a year. The first and last day of daylight saving time serve as good reminders to test and replace batteries.

To check the operation of a smoke detector, simply press and hold the alarm’s “test” button. If it beeps, or rings loudly, it is working properly. Consumers should avoid testing a detector by using candles or matches placed under the alarm as repeated use of smoke to activate the device can cause them to fail when an actual fire occurs.

For more information on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and other related safety measures, contact the Las Cruces Fire Department at (575) 528-4150 or visit the department’s website at www.CLCFD.com.

Avoid Porch Piracy this Holiday Season

A forecast record for online-shopping this holiday season will undoubtedly result in a record number of packages delivered.

Along with the expected increase in packages delivered comes a grim warning: porch piracy also may become more prominent this year.

Delivery services such as FedEx, UPS and the United States Postal Service say the number of packages stolen usually increases this time of year, partly because more packages are being delivered and because some deliveries will be made past sunset and well into the evening hours.

The Las Cruces Police Departments has these tips to help prevent porch piracy:

• Track deliveries online and try to be home at the time packages are delivered.
• Require a signature for all home delivery packages.
• When scheduling a delivery, leave instructions on where the package can be delivered.
• Request electronic notification when delivery is made.
• Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to receive your package at the time of delivery.
• If possible, have the package delivered to your place of employment or a location where you know it can be securely received.
• Schedule online purchases from big box retailers to be delivered to their local store where you can arrange for curbside pickup.
• Have the package delivered to a FedEx or UPS store where it can be held for pickup.
• Consider installing a motion-detection home security system, such as a Ring or Nest, that records video and sends immediate notice of activity to your smartphone.
• Be a good neighbor and watch for suspicious activity. Immediately call police if any such activity is seen in your neighborhood.

Consumers might also consider purchasing insurance for the contents of packages at the time delivery is scheduled. Insuring the items does not prevent them from being stolen but does help provide restitution if items go missing.
