Hey High Range Village neighbors!

Summer is officially showing up strong, and Las Cruces is hitting its first major heatwave of the year. Starting today, we are looking at temperatures at or above 100 degrees for the next 3 to 4 days, along with extreme UV exposure warnings.

The safety and well-being of our residents and team members are always our top priorities. As we head into these intense triple-digit days, please take extra care of yourselves, your loved ones, and your pets!

Here are a few quick reminders to stay safe:

💧 Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Try to limit caffeine and alcohol, which can speed up dehydration.
🧠 Know the Signs of Heat Stroke: This is a medical emergency! Watch for high body temperature, red/hot/dry skin (or heavy sweating), dizziness, nausea, or confusion. If you or someone else experiences this, call 911 immediately.
🕶️ Protect Skin & Eyes: Sunburn can happen in minutes with these UV levels. Slap on that SPF 30+, grab a wide-brimmed hat, and wear UV-blocking sunglasses if you have to go out.
🐾 Keep Pets Safe: Ensure your furry friends have plenty of fresh, cold water and stay indoors in the cool air. Remember, asphalt and pavement get hot enough to blister their paws in seconds!

🦉 High Range Village Neighborhood Watch: The "Fluffball" Edition 🦉

If you’ve been walking around the neighborhood lately, you might have noticed some very intense, very yellow eyes staring back at you from the ground or a low porch. No, you haven't entered a real-life version of Angry Birds—we have Great Horned Owl fledglings finding their footing in the neighborhood!

While these oversized, downy lawn ornaments look incredibly confused (and maybe a little helpless), they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

Here is the lowdown on our new feather-brained residents and how we can keep them safe:

🛑 Grounded but Not Abandoned
It is completely normal for owl fledglings to spend time on the ground or on low structures while they learn how to use their wings. They are essentially teenagers learning to drive—there are going to be some awkward parallel parking jobs.

👁️ Mom and Dad are Always Watching
As you can see from our local paparazzi photos, Mom or Dad is usually perched nearby in a tree keeping a very sharp eye on things. They know exactly where their babies are and will continue to feed and protect them on the ground. # # # 🙅 Please Leave the Babys Alone
As tempting as it is to try and "rescue" them or give them a hug, please do not touch or move them. * Give them space: Keep your distance so the parents feel safe coming down to feed them.

Leash your pets: Please keep a close eye on dogs and cats when walking near areas where the fledglings are hanging out.

Let's enjoy our front-row seat to nature's awkward phase and give these little guys the space they need to find their wings! 🌲✨
