Millions of American families just got the biggest housing win in a generation.

The 21st Century Road to Housing Act officially became law overnight Friday, marking the most comprehensive action Congress has taken to lower housing costs for renters and homebuyers in the 21st century. It's a genuine milestone for every family that has been priced out of the American dream.

The bipartisan legislation includes more than 40 provisions designed to bring costs down and boost supply, making it easier to build new homes and limiting how many single-family houses institutional investors can buy up nationwide. That means more homes on the market for real families instead of Wall Street landlords.

The relief could not come at a better time. The median price of an existing home hit an all-time high of $440,660 in June, and a family now needs roughly $117,000 a year to afford an average home, nearly $30,000 more than most American households earn.

The American people demanded this. A survey from the Bipartisan Policy Center found that 89 percent of voters across the political spectrum wanted Congress to act on housing affordability, and Congress delivered in a rare moment of bipartisan agreement.

Trump refused to sign the bill in protest, demanding a voter ID law first, but he couldn't stop it. Because he never vetoed it, the bill became law automatically without his signature.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries put it plainly, saying Republicans "would rather make it harder to vote than easier to afford a home."

Trump tried to stand in the way, and the law of the land moved right past him. Help is on the way for millions of Americans.
