📍May 4, 1988 | Wigwam Pkwy and Gibson Rd

38 years ago today, the ground shook in Henderson and nobody in the valley ever forgot it. 💥

May 4, 1988 — at Wigwam Parkway and Gibson Road, a welder’s torch ignited ammonium perchlorate at the PEPCON plant, triggering a series of explosions so massive the final blast registered 3.5 on the Richter scale and was felt across the entire Las Vegas Valley.

4,500 tons of rocket fuel oxidizer. Damage spanning a 10-mile radius — shattered windows, doors blown off hinges, collapsed ceilings, cracked walls. Seven miles away at McCarran, windows cracked and a Boeing 737 on final approach was jolted by the shockwave. The smoke was visible 100 miles away. It remains the most powerful civilian explosion in U.S. history.
Two lives lost. Over 370 injured. Nearly $100 million in damage.

Today that corner of Wigwam and Gibson is a thriving business district — Touro University, Ocean Spray, and corporate parks where total destruction once stood. No trace of what happened there 38 years ago.

Where were you when it happened? Drop it in the comments. 👇

We remember Roy Westerfield and Bruce Haulker. 🕊️

I remember this week well. My friend and I ditched work and called off sick to go to the grand opening because they were giving free rides on the big shot all day long.

We even ended up on the radio, and unfortunately our boss was listening while we chatted with the DJs. 🤣

Luckily, we didn’t lose our jobs, but she was pi**ed! 1990s Las Vegas was a vibe. IYKYK!

Watching history unfold from a rooftop on Las Vegas Boulevard.

⏰April 22, 1952, just after 9:30 AM. Customers and employees of Don & Bob’s Motor Service climbed to the roof at 908 Las Vegas Blvd S and turned northwest toward the Nevada desert.

Somewhere out there, beyond South 4th and Hoover Ave, the sky had just been split open.
What they were watching was an atomic test detonation at the Nevada Test Site, roughly 65 miles away, close enough to see the cloud billow upward with their own eyes.

This was life in early 1950s Las Vegas. Nuclear tests were almost routine. Local businesses would post blast schedules. Hotels advertised rooftop “Dawn Bomb Parties.” The atomic age wasn’t something abstract happening in a laboratory. It was something you watched from your parking lot before opening for the day.

Look closely at the street below. The cars, the tanker truck, the quiet suburban neighborhood in the background. Everything looks completely ordinary, except for what’s rising on the horizon.

Las Vegas in 1952 was a city of 25,000 people still figuring out what it wanted to be. Nobody fully understood the risks yet. For many, this was just… Tuesday morning.

There is a side of me most people have never seen. 🤍

I have spent 23 years in Las Vegas real estate, but I also hold a certification that has nothing to do with selling homes and everything to do with being human.

I am a certified end of life doula. I volunteer weekly at hospice, sitting with families during one of the most profound transitions a human being goes through.

When a family needs to sell a home during a health crisis, a move to assisted living, or after a loss, they do not just need a competent agent. They need someone who understands the weight of the moment.

That is what I bring. 🕊️

If you or someone you know is navigating this kind of transition, I would be honored to be a resource. Even if it is just a conversation.
