Business email compromise (BEC) is a sophisticated scam in which fraudsters pose as a trusted source and trick individuals and businesses into sending money or sharing sensitive information. The victim believes they are conducting a legitimate transaction, though in reality it is fraudulent.

Knowledge is key to staying ahead of the scammers who are working overtime to steal your hard-earned funds! Earlier this month, in our July Newsletter, we shared the three different types of social engineering (Pretexting, Baiting and Phishing). As a follow up, here are some additional tips to help protect yourself:

Delete requests for personal information or passwords and do not respond. No one should contact you for your personal information. Not even your financial institution.
Disregard offers for help or requests for help from those you don’t know. Especially if unsolicited.
Avoid tempting offers. Though it may be difficult to pass on what appears to be a great offer, don’t just dive in. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you’re really interested, take a step back and do some research. Confirm that the company is legitimate by researching reviews. If they are reputable, call the company allegedly offering the deal to ensure the offer came from them and not a scammer pretending to be them.
Verify contacts. Scammers usually imitate legitimate companies by mimicking their names in emails or using caller ID spoofing. You can check their authenticity by looking at the domain name of an email address or hanging up on an unsolicited caller, verifying the legitimate phone number, and calling back.

Scammers send unsolicited calendar invitations to your email account, which may automatically add an event to your phone’s calendar. These fake events often contain fraudulent links and may claim something like:

• Your Package is Ready for Shipping!
• Short-Term Loans - Apply Now!
• Immediate Attention is Needed on Your Account!
• Your Phone May Not be Protected - Click Here to Protect it Now!

These messages are designed to provoke curiosity and create a sense of urgency.

Here's what you can do if you come across these scams:

• Don't click any links or provide any personal information. Scammers often use these events to phish for personal information or to install malicious software on your device.
• Delete suspicious calendar events. Even if an event is on your calendar, it doesn’t mean it’s legitimate. If you didn't create or accept the event invitation, it's best to delete it.
• Report the event. If your email provider has the option to report phishing attempts, use this feature to help protect others.

Here's how you can avoid becoming a victim:

• Change your calendar settings. By default, some calendars automatically add events from emails. You can prevent this by changing your settings to only add invitations that you've accepted.
• Always verify before you trust. If an event claims to be from a company you know, contact them directly via their official website or customer service line to verify.
