A common misconception is that if your home sells for $500,000, you'll receive a $500,000 check at closing.

In reality, your final proceeds are reduced by expenses such as:

• Agent compensation
• Title and escrow fees
• Buyer concessions

• Mortgage payoff
• Moving expenses

For example, a homeowner selling a $500,000 property with a $300,000 mortgage and approximately 8% in selling costs could walk away with around $160,000, not $500,000.
