Mortgage rates dropped below 6 percent for the first time in more than three years on Thursday, with Freddie Mac reporting the average 30 year rate at 5.98 percent.

That is down from nearly 7 percent this time last year and below the peak of just under 7.8 percent reached in October 2023.

Economists say the decline could mean hundreds of dollars in monthly savings for buyers and may encourage some Americans to reenter the market ahead of the spring season.
