Especially in the heat we've been having! Skip the mowing for a bit longer.

Turf science and conservation biology agree on this one, which almost never happens.

THE HEIGHT: Root depth correlates with mowing height. Grass cut at 3.5-4 inches develops a substantially deeper root system than grass cut at 1.5-2 inches. Deeper roots mean better drought tolerance, better nutrient access, and less irrigation dependence.

THE W**D SUPPRESSION: Taller turf shades the soil surface. Most w**d seeds — crabgrass in particular — require light to germinate. Higher mowing is one of the most effective non-chemical w**d controls available and it's free.

THE FREQUENCY: The "one-third rule" — NEVER remove more than a third of the blade at once. Cutting less often but higher stresses the plant far less than frequent scalping.

THE CLIPPINGS: Leave them. Grass clippings return roughly 25-30% of the lawn's annual nitrogen needs. They do NOT cause thatch — that's a persistent myth. Thatch comes from stems and rhizomes, not leaf clippings.

THE ECONOMICS: Less fuel, less time, less water, less fertilizer, fewer herbicide applications.

WHAT ABOUT THE HOA: Mowing at 4 inches on a 2-week cycle is not "unmowed." It looks like a normal lawn. This is the version of lawn reform nobody can object to.

Raise the deck. Skip a week. That's it.

I'm ecstatic to report I finished with 2nd 🥈place in the Real Estate Agent category 👏 Another fun Best of Lawrence annual bash - this time with PUPPIES! These little ones are part of the Golden Group at the Lawrence Humane Society. They’re just 6 weeks old, so they aren’t quite ready for adoption yet, but they will be in about two weeks! 🐾
