Lebanon Artways, the City’s Arts and Culture Commission, is once again calling on poets to share their words with the Lebanon community. Timber Tumble is an outdoor exhibition located just off the Meadow Loop and River Loop Trails. It encourages visitors to venture into the woods and reconnect with nature in a whole new way.
It’s an auditory experience, it’s an interactive playscape, and it’s a meditative sculpture park all in one. This outdoor exhibition was created using natural and found materials sourced from the Montshire’s 110-acre property. Timber Tumble features hand-made and rough-hewn switchbacks, spirals, raceways, and ball runs that are designed to engage all senses and encourage calm.
Made possible with generous support from the Ann and Henry Gallagher Family.
Wheelchair Accessibility/What to Expect: Timber Tumble spans two outdoor locations accessible by trail from Science Park by going through the walking tunnel under the train tracks. One site is in the woods, the other site is at the far side of the meadow, and both are accessible from the newly resurfaced Meadow Loop Trail. A rough or all-terrain wheelchair/jogger is recommended. Ground surfaces include compacted crushed stone, compacted dirt path, soft pine needle forest floor, and rough woods chips. Structures are sized for adults and may require a partner’s assistance to access all features and retrieve balls from tracks or that have bounced to the forest floor. Some components may not be easily accessible from a wheelchair due to the natural topography of the forest floor.

Start your scale-model journey from the sculpture of the Sun in David Goudy Science Park.

As you journey along the Planet Walk you will encounter the inner planets (Mercury first, then Venus, the Earth, and Mars), then the Asteroid Belt and the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune). To reach tiny dwarf planet Pluto and the Kuiper Belt, be prepared for a 1.5-mile walk along the Ridge Trail and the Hazen Trail, which runs through Norwich and Wilder.

You’ll be surprised by how far apart the planets really are, compared to pictures of the solar system often seen in books!
