Once upon a time my husband used a fishing net to get a bat out of a home. True story (and heres the proof!). And while it made for a great memory, there is actually a much better way to handle this.
If you live in or around Parkville, Riverside, Gladstone, Liberty, Independence, Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, Overland Park, Shawnee, or Lawrence, bats in the home are more common than you think. Older neighborhoods and homes near wooded areas or water are especially prone to it.
Here is what you need to know if you find them.
First, do not panic. Bats are protected by law in both Missouri and Kansas, which means you cannot poison or kill them. The only legal method of removal is live bat exclusion.
Signs you might have bats: droppings near your attic or walls, a musty odor, scratching or rustling sounds at night, or actually seeing them fly in or out at dusk.
What to do: contact a licensed wildlife removal company. They will seal entry points and install one way devices that let bats exit but not return. And please, put the fishing net away. 😂
One important note: exclusions cannot be done during maternity season, typically late spring through summer, when baby bats cannot yet fly on their own.
Catching this early protects your home from structural damage, odor, and costly repairs down the road. 🏡
