The Sound of Silence | September 11, 25 Years Later

This morning, take 75 seconds for a quiet walk through Prouty Park in Spencer.

Twenty-five years after September 11, reminders of that day remain in communities across America—including here in Central Massachusetts.

This memorial honors Spencer native Brian David Sweeney, a U.S. Navy veteran and passenger aboard United Airlines Flight 175.

Inscribed on his memorial:

“Your calm is in the trees.”

Remembering Brian David Sweeney and all those lost on September 11, 2001.

Is there anything better than fresh-cut hay?

Hayfields like this are more than part of the Central Massachusetts landscape. For generations, haying has been one way landowners have kept open land productive while maintaining fields that might otherwise eventually return to forest.

Land is rarely just acreage and boundary lines. How it has been used, how it’s being maintained, and what uses it may support in the future are all part of understanding a property.

Sometimes a morning walk is a good reminder that the landscape around us is still working.

Spotted this turtle submerged along my morning walk today, with one of her eggs sitting there beside her. A few seconds later, she swam off.

It's the little things.

Lois Doray - Real Estate Agent at P&H Property Consulting, Inc. had this custom welcome mat made for her open houses, and we thought it was worth sharing.

Balloons and signs may help people find the house, but Lois wanted people to feel welcome when they got to the door.

A small detail, but a pretty good reflection of the care she brings to her work.

Old Home Day in Charlton.

Labor Day weekend means a lot of different traditions across Central Massachusetts. In Charlton, one of the biggest is Old Home Day — a tradition dating back to 1897.

Josh Somers calls Charlton home, and we're glad to see him supporting the community where he lives and works while continuing to build his real estate business there as part of P&H.

There’s a full day planned today with the road race, Highland Games, kids activities, vendors, live music, awards and the 3:30 parade.

The rain should be moving out this morning, so hopefully everyone gets a good day for it.

If you're headed toward the Spencer Fair this weekend, there's some local history just a few minutes in the other direction.

Down Meadow Road sits the South Spencer Schoolhouse and the veterans memorials at Gadbois Square — a small piece of local history that's easy to drive past without knowing what's there.

On September 18 from 4–6 PM, we're hoping to hear from people who remember the schoolhouse, the old South Spencer Community Club, the neighborhood, or the people and events connected to this place.

Sometimes there's a lot to discover just by taking the road less traveled.

Another step in an old-house project.

After repairing the fieldstone walls in this 230-year-old basement, the floor was next.

The old concrete came out, we excavated for the new floor, graded and compacted the stone base, installed a v***r barrier, and got ready for new concrete.

We also uncovered plenty of old fieldstone along the way. Naturally, we saved it for future projects.

Old properties tend to reveal their history one project at a time.

A year ago today Phil and I finally finished this project after working on it little by little for years. Lots of mortar, lots of mess, and a few things learned along the way. 😂

Old New England houses are good teachers.

One year ago today, Broker / Owners Phil and Heidi Olivo finished repointing the fieldstone walls in the basement of their roughly 230-year-old home.

Stone by stone. Bucket by bucket. A lot of work — and a lot learned along the way.

We've since filmed this basement during some serious rain to see how the old fieldstone foundation actually handles water today.
