Blast from the past, my former associate and I helping 5he Friends of Pettingill School Park out 7 years ago
You may have spotted Don Dostie and Shawn Mitchell conducting a ground study yesterday at Pettingill School Park. Don works at Four Points Associates, Inc. and is a member of the Friends of Pettingill Steering Committee, and his assistant Shawn Mitchell is a student at University of Maine at Orono. Don provided us with the following explanation of their work yesterday:
“Prior to doing any layout work for Mark Labonte (of Labonte Landscaping) we needed to locate some existing features and try to locate property corners. None of the irons called for in the 1925 deed to the City of Lewiston were found. We did find some iron pins/pipes marking other property corners. We found 7 or 8 other pipes for other property corners on Little, Marble and College Streets. We will use that information to develop approximate property lines for the park itself and the street right of way lines. While there we also located any utility structures, manholes, water and gas valve gates we could see. We located telephone poles, the trees within the property (including one very large stump) the fences, pavement edges and curbs. We didn’t have time to locate the playground facilities or wall, Shawn had a golf game to go to!
In total we gathered about 125 shots and once downloaded into a CAD program we will prepare an Existing Conditions plan with the approximate boundary lines showing. Once that base sheet is prepared we can take the LA drawing of the pathways, proposed plantings, etc…, overlay and rotate onto our drawing file. With that accomplished we will be able to set points on anything FoP wants laid out, paths, trees, etc.”
