It's the season of BRRRRR here!! Some important tips for your home during this freeze, whether it's lived in or vacant...

Drip Faucets: Let both hot and cold faucets drip slowly, especially those on exterior walls, to keep water moving and prevent freezing.
Cabinet Doors: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to reach pipes located inside.
Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas (attics, basements, crawl spaces) with insulation.
Keep Heat Constant: Maintain a minimum of 55F-65F in the home, even if you are away, to prevent pipes in walls from freezing.
Turn Off Water: If you lose power or leave for an extended time, turn off the main water valve and drain the system. Know where your water shut off valve is located!

We hope everyone is getting through this weather safely. To help with that, here are a few tips for what to do after the storm.

Shovel Safely: Take breaks when shoveling to avoid overexertion.

Check for Damage: Inspect your home for leaks, frozen pipes, or structural issues.

Clear Exhaust Vents: Ensure dryer and furnace vents are clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

If you are going to be affected by the incoming winter storm, safety is priority, and we hope the following can help you prepare. Start by assembling a 3-day emergency kit (water, non-perishables, flashlights, batteries, radio), winterizing your home (insulation, pipe insulation), keeping cars fueled, and stocking up on essentials like medicine and pet supplies. Stay warm with layers, use alternative heat safely, and keep devices charged.

Key Preparation Steps:
Home Protection: Insulate walls, attic, and pipes to prevent freezing. Seal drafts with caulk or weather stripping.

Emergency Supplies: Gather blankets, flashlights with extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, and a first-aid kit.

Food and Water: Stock up on non-perishable food that requires no cooking (e.g., canned goods, protein bars) and at least one gallon of water per person per day.

Heating Safety: Ensure fireplaces are cleaned and stock up on firewood. Never use generators, grills, or camping stoves indoors.

Car Safety: Keep your gas tank at least half-full. Create a car survival kit with a shovel, windshield scraper, blanket, sand/cat litter for traction, and jumper cables.

Communication: Charge phones and portable power banks before the storm.
