Older installations of fiber cement siding typically had caulk at the butt-joints. Over time, that caulk shrinks and deteriorates. Metal flashing at these butt joints are the modern standard of installation as this alleviates ongoing maintenance of caulk/paint. If you start to see gaps at the butt joints, consider metal flashing
